From the first time ancient man or woman found a colored rock on the beach or in the dirt, humans have been fascinated and intrigued by them. How did the first polished rocks happen? The gentle abrasion by the waves on a sandy beach, the wearing smooth of a stone tied around a neck or wrist, or perhaps the steady drip of water? No one knows for sure. When it was discovered that a crude colored rock could be transformed into something to catch the eye and the imagination is when gemstones came into being.

I recently read a hilarious book by Mari SanGiovanni. I knew from the title Greetings from Jamaica Wish You were Queer this book was going to be funny and that it would probably challenge the mindset of some more traditional folks.
While the story seems to be an autobiography of the author’s life, I still can’t say for sure if all these crazy things actually happened to Mari. She might have been awarded millions of dollars in the settlement of her grandmother’s estate, but then again, it might be one of the stories about what we wish would happen to us.
History is important because of what we as people need it for. It affects us and we need to be able to understand it effectively to become aware of what is around us. As we have looked at the course of history, I have noticed that many people have changed with times showing their nature as human beings. When you observe the cause and effect relationships and what really happens, you will see how people change. Their true forms will be revealed when the times call for it. When the situation is tough, people have to become their person 5 times over. Whatever they do, they have to do it better or worse it needed. The nature of humans is hard to understand because you never really understand what a person is in their hearts. Many factors can affect how they are as human beings.

Having grown up immersed in south Asian culture, I came to be familiar with jewelry as a standard accessory and essential part of a woman’s expressive identity. In my culture, women adorn themselves with precious jewels as readily as one would put on their wristwatch here in the west. Upon moving to the United States as a young woman, I discovered that jewelry is looked upon as a luxury, usually bestowed upon a woman by her significant other, and only on special or rare occasions.
