The great search for a new job can sometimes be more like a war than a hunt…you have tons of competition and only one of you guys gets to have that job, and the other people want it as bad as you do. There are three main things to consider when you’re going on a jobhunting campaign, and I’m here as your training officer to teach you how to best arm yourself and make the most of what you have at your disposal. Following are three of the most important points of a successful campaign.
1) ALWAYS make sure you write a cover letter. If you’re sending in a resume, you need to include a cover letter. Sending a resume without a cover letter is like taking a gun with no bullets. Sure, it has some limited use, but to achieve maximum efficiency you’re going to want to complete the package. A cover letter is simply too valuable to leave home without it.
2) Do your research! For any campaign to achieve success, you’re going to have to know what you’re getting yourself into. Whether you’re about to parachute into hostile enemy territory or send a cover letter to a potential employer, you have to have all the information you can gather about your target. Find out the who’s, the what’s, the where’s, and the why’s. Who are you writing to, what does the company do, where do they do it, and why are you a valuable asset for them to have? Demonstrating knowledge of the company will impress the employers and help them understand that you’re not just surfing the phonebook for any job available.
3) Be proactive! If you stand idly on the battlefield, you’re going to get shot. If you just send out your cover letter and hope for the best, your chances of getting that job will get shot. Take initiative! Be the person whose dedication to getting that job shines out above everyone else fighting beside you. Don’t wait for the employers to call you for an interview, you call them to make an appointment. If you wait for everything to be handed to you, you’ll be left grasping air wondering why your gorgeous cover letter didn’t work.
These are three of the greatest tactics you can employ when you’re in that struggle for a paying job. Even a great general can lose a war, but with a strategy like this, the odds are going to be significantly in your favor. Victory is right there, all you have to do is stand up and grab it!
